NERACOOS has integrated a new wave buoy into our data network.
A new directional wave buoy was launched Thursday, September 17. Funded by the Rhode Island Regional Sediment Management (RSM) Plan, the new buoy is stationed about 10 miles southeast of Block Island, RI. The RSM Plan is partnered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New England District, and the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC).
Scripps Oceanograhic Institute Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) will make available the data that is generated and display it in real-time. This real-time data can also be seen on the NERACOOS website’s homepage.
This Datawell directional buoy measures wave energy, wave direction, and temperature. Its location is 40 58.86 N 71 7.30 W (40.9810 -71.1217), at a water depth of 49 m (161 ft, 27fm). To see real-time observations of this buoy click here (NERACOOS) or here (CDIP).
Update, September 21- The buoy moved unexpectedly sometime after Friday, Sept 18, and was recovered on Monday Sept 21. All systems on the buoy were still working well. A new mooring is being prepared by the CDIP team and will be shipped to RI.
A redeployment in the next few weeks is anticipated!
